Liverpool defender Joe Gomez shared his gratitude while revealing that his former teammates who left the club suffer from nostalgia
Joe Gomez shared his gratitude for staying at Liverpool for so long while revealing his former teammates’ feelings of nostalgia. The Anfield Wrap awarded Gomez with the “Embodiment of Liverpool FC” award in 2024 for his consistent performances last season.
Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in the summer of 2015 under former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. He established himself quickly at just 18 years of age but the recurring injuries slowed down his progress at Liverpool.
Rodgers soon departed as Jurgen Klopp’s legendary era commenced when Gomez suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury. Gomez is the only player to stay throughout the Jurgen Klopp era at Liverpool, earning respect from managers and peers.
The 27-year-old is at the peak years of his career, playing under the third head coach at Liverpool next season. Arne Slot is inheriting a formidable squad from Klopp and experienced players like Gomez are very important in the transition.
Gomez told the Anfield Wrap that many former teammates who moved on expressed how good being at Liverpool was.
“Being here this many years it’s only grown over time making me realise how special it is here. Speaking to some of the boys that have moved on and them emphasising how good of a place this. I guess sometimes having something to compare it to helps, but I’m just grateful to be here and long may it continue.”
Liverpool suffered a severe injury crisis last season but Gomez played a pivotal role during that period, showcasing his versatility. The 27-year-old played as a right-back, left-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder according to the team’s requirements depending on the situation.
The Englishman’s selflessness, and ability to adapt and maintain a high level of consistency played a crucial role for Liverpool. The 27-year-old made 51 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, contributing with three assists despite prioritizing defensive duties.
