Liverpool are discussing a contract extension for Ibrahima Konate this summer amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain for the French defender

Liverpool are discussing a contract extension for their first-team defender Ibrahima Konate amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain for him. Konate played a pivotal role for Liverpool despite suffering a drop in form during the latter stages of the season.

The France international has played in rotation with Jarell Quansah throughout this season to provide longevity to his availability. Throughout his tenure at Liverpool, Konate has struggled with nagging injuries as he missed several games last season as well.

However, the 25-year-old has delivered impressive performances whenever he became available, apart from his short struggle in form last season. Konate’s struggle with form coincided with Liverpool’s sudden drop in form during the latter stages of the season.

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old made 37 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season, contributing with one assist. He received five yellow cards and one controversial red card in a crucial away loss against Arsenal.

French publication L’Equipe (via Liverpool Echo) reported that Liverpool are discussing a contract extension for Konate to secure his future. The Frenchman is happy at Liverpool despite the change in the managerial spot with Arne Slot succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

PSG are planning a big transfer window, targeting top players to bolster their squad after another season of European failure. They have also lost their star forward Kylian Mbappe as he moved on after the expiration of his club contract.

Speaking to Canal Plus (via RMC Sport) last year, Konate admitted the potential of playing for PSG in the future. He said:

“Could I imagine myself wearing the red and blue of PSG?  If I said no, I’d be lying, but if you’re asking, is it one of my objectives? Not at all.”

Konate is currently reaching the prime year of his career and he has a pivotal role to play for Liverpool. With Van Dijk nearing the latter stages of his peak years, Konate could assume control of the leadership in defence. However, the 25-year-old needs to maintain his fitness and regain the consistency to fulfil his massive potential at the club.
