Wolves manager Gary O’Neil wants Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to replace their potentially outgoing number-one Jose Sa during the summer
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is a transfer target for Wolves manager Gary O’Neil amid the potential departure of Jose Sa. Kelleher has already confirmed his ambition to become a first-team regular elsewhere as he reaches his peak career years.
The Ireland international has played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s success under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp despite being a number-two. His competition, Alisson Becker, is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and understandably the number-one keeper at Liverpool.
Last season, Alisson suffered an injury that allowed Kelleher a lengthy opportunity for first-team action and he delivered immensely. The 25-year-old has also played a key role in the two Carabao Cup victories under Klopp, establishing his Liverpool legacy.
The Irishman made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Reds last season, keeping five clean sheets. Liverpool’s defence struggled with keeping clean sheets as the injury crisis and complacent moments took a heavy toll.
TEAMtalk reported that Sa is potentially leaving Wolves as O’Neil wants to replace him with Kelleher. O’Neil has worked with Kelleher as an assistant manager to Barry Lewtas’ Liverpool under-23 squad in 2020.
Working again with a manager who has seen him during his development days could help Kelleher adjust quickly. At the same time, Liverpool would want to find a suitable replacement for Kelleher during the summer.
Most of the top clubs have a strong number two and given the injury crisis that Liverpool suffered last season, they need to be wary of a repeat of that situation. Klopp designated the Irishman as the best number-two in the world and Kelleher delivered to that tag consistently.
