International Watch: Liverpool players gear up for Euro 2024 in style

A look at how Liverpool stars are performing for their countries

It was a busy night for several Liverpool players as they took to the field in their nation’s colours ahead of a summer filled with international tournaments.

Diogo Jota marked his return from injury in style as he netted in Portugal’s win over Finland, while Caoimhin Kelleher and Dominik Szoboszlai came up against each other in Ireland’s 2-1 win over Hungary in an international friendly on Tuesday night.

Jota missed the end of the 2023/24 campaign for Liverpool after picking up a hip problem in the 3-1 win at Fulham in mid-April, going unused in Jurgen Klopp’s final game in charge of the Reds against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But having attained full fitness, he has been called up to the Portugal squad for the upcoming 2024 Euro. Portugal kicked off their 2024 Euro campaign preparations with a 4-2 win over Finland on Tuesday night in Lisbon, with Jota scoring from the spot after Francisco Conceicao was brought down in the penalty area before being replaced by Goncalo Ramos as one of five half-time alterations.

Republic of Ireland ended Hungary’s 14-game unbeaten run, as Kelleher got the better of his Liverpool teammate Szoboszlai on Tuesday. The shot-stopper produced five solid saves to deny Szoboszlai and Co., with Troy Parrott netting the winner in stoppage time for the Republic of Ireland.

Among several Reds shining for their respective nations is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who partnered Conor Gallagher in the middle of the park and helped England to a 3-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in a warm-up game on Monday.

The 25-year-old scored a scrumptious volley to cap off a fine night and bolster his hopes of featuring in midfield for the Three Lions at Euro 2024.

Joe Gomez enjoyed a runout of 17 minutes after replacing Lewis Dunk in the second half for England, while Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah were unused substitutes.

Elsewhere, Andy Robertson led Scotland to a 2-0 friendly win over Gibraltar on Monday, clocking 65 minutes in his tank. Unfortunately, Ben Doak has suffered another injury setback and will not be playing in the mega tournament this summer.

The young winger,18, did not participate in Scotland’s win over Gibraltar but he can now focus on his rehabilitation back with Liverpool and get ready for the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Fans are eagerly following the performances of all Liverpool players during the international break, hoping for injury-free and successful campaigns at Euro and Copa America.
