Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah has stayed with team England as cover despite not making the 26-man squad for EURO 2024

England have put Liverpool star Jarell Quansah on standby despite excluding him from the 26-man squad for the EURO 2024. Quansah played an important role for Liverpool last season despite it being his breakthrough season under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp.

The 21-year-old competed with formidable France defender Ibrahima Konate and the Reds captain Virgil van Dijk for the first-team spot. Quansah displayed all-round ability, technique and maturity despite the lack of age and experience that immensely favoured his in-squad competitors.

The Englishman displayed calmness on and off the ball, making well-timed tackles and interceptions while having pace to make recoveries. The 21-year-old made 34 appearances for the Reds in all competitions last season, contributing three goals and providing three assists. Quansah received only three yellow cards throughout the campaign, displaying his discipline, calmness and maturity despite playing under an attacking philosophy.

Mirror journalist John Cross used his official X account to report that Quansah is staying put with the England camp. Southgate opted for the players he is more accustomed to, over the 21-year-old who remains uncapped at the top-most level.

England have opted to keep players like Luke Shaw who missed most of the last season due to nagging injuries. Shaw is still facing a race against time due to the hamstring injury but Southgate chose to still pick him.

Regardless of the omission, Quansah’s steep rise and near-selection for the Euro 2024 shows the future he has in football. Experts compared the 21-year-old to his Liverpool captain Van Dijk, one of the very best defenders in the football world.
