FSV Mainz 05 have open negotiations with Liverpool to sign unhappy defender Sepp van den Berg during the summer window

Liverpool are currently negotiating a permanent transfer deal with FSV Mainz 05 for the unhappy defender Sepp van den Berg. Van den Berg voiced his unhappiness in a controversial interview that consisted of many self-contradictory statements from the Dutch defender.

The 22-year-old shared his unhappiness about the £20 million transfer price tag that the Reds put on him for sale. He cited that the price is too high while also accusing the club of overlooking him throughout his Liverpool tenure.

Fans rejected his self-contradictory that reeked of insecurity, despite supporting him throughout his loan spell. The Dutchman opted to consistently go out on loan when legendary manager Jurgen Klopp and his staff wanted him here.

Van den Berg chose to gain first-team experience through a loan spell while players like Jarell Quansah stayed and proved themselves. There is no denying that the Dutchman has qualities but his interview displayed a fragile mentality and unfairness towards Liverpool.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg stated that Mainz and Liverpool are currently negotiating a permanent deal for Van den Berg. While Mainz bosses are optimistic over an agreement, Liverpool would want a deal that nears their £20 million price tag.

Van den Berg enjoyed a successful spell at Mainz, helping them survive the relegation drop from the Bundesliga last season. He played as the centre-back in the three-man defensive formation and displayed his immense talents on and off the ball.

Liverpool fans have argued that the 22-year-old had a great opportunity to prove himself during the pre-season under Arne Slot. The new Liverpool head coach is a Dutchman himself and he brings his expertise in developing young talent, renowned for getting the best out of raw potential players.

However, the negotiation with Mainz will decide whether Van den Berg plays for Liverpool in the pre-season or not. One thing is certain, if the 22-year-old wants to achieve any success in professional football, he needs to work on his insecurities. Suggesting that he is not even worth a mere £20 million in the inflated market while claiming that he deserved more chances at Liverpool is a problematic attitude.
