Liverpool firmly in the race to land €32m rated versatile Dutchman with fast expiring contract

Liverpool in the race to sign Lutsharel Geertruida this summer

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf has reported that Liverpool have entered the race to sign Lutsharel Geertruida from Feyenoord this summer but will face competition from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur for his services.

Geertruida was also on RB Leipzig’s radar last summer and was on the verge of a €30 million transfer to RB Leipzig until the Bundesliga giants suddenly pulled the plug on his signing.

With a contract that is only valid until June 2025, Feyenoord are resigned to selling the 23-year-old this summer or face the risk of losing him as a free agent next year.

Arne Slot is looking to add a fresh face to his backline and his former captain is an attractive name, and with an age of only 23, he promises to be a long-term option for the Reds.

The Dutch youngster, though a central defender naturally, is able to play as a right-back as well which means he can provide much-needed competition to Trent Alexander-Arnold as well.

The England right-back has chances of being used in midfield due to his offensive nature in case of a new right-back’s arrival, which means Geertruida’s signing would open up numerous tactical possibilities for Arne Slot.

The Feyenoord captain’s utility as a central defender will also prove handy to Liverpool following Joel Matip’s exit as a free agent and with Virgil van Dijk also on the wrong side of the 30s.

Even though Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in bringing in Geertruida, the transfer may be Liverpool’s to lose due to the presence of Arne Slot in their dugout and an exciting sporting project in the works at Anfield.

Although he is valued at €32 million on Transfermarkt, Liverpool could try to negotiate a more favourable deal for Geertruida as Feyenoord are at risk of losing him as a free agent in a year’s time.
