Liverpool ace heaps praise on Portuguese youngster amidst Anfield links
Diogo Jota heaped praise on Benfica youngster Joao Neves for his qualities amid interest from Liverpool to sign the Portuguese. The 19-year-old established himself as the first-team starter for Benfica and broke into the Portugal national setup during last season.
Standing at 1.74 metres, Neves has a deceptively strong upper body strength and athleticism to compete with powerful opposition players. The 19-year-old uses a low centre of gravity, close control and strength to shield the ball and work through tight spaces.
Despite his lack of height, Neves uses great leaps and well-timed jumps to win aerial duels regularly for his team. The 19-year-old excels in midfield, showcasing maturity, astute game-reading, and decisive decision-making that benefits his team both on and off the ball.
Neves is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder and central midfielder, showcasing all-round abilities to contribute to the game. He has good vision, passing range and accuracy to distribute and control possession while also making progressive carries when required.
The Portugal international scored three goals and provided two assists last season from 55 appearances in all competitions for Benfica. Neves has focused more on the defensive aspect of his game despite having a good influence on the offensive play.
Jota told Goal (via Liverpool Echo) that Neves has the quality and the potential to go very far in his career. He said:
“Joao Neves has the quality and the mindset to go really far.”
Top European clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, actively pursue Neves. Liverpool have only Wataru Endo as the specialist defensive midfielder in their squad and a number six upgrade could help.
Despite Endo’s successful season at Liverpool, the Japan captain struggled with the pace of the Premier League at times. New head coach Arne Slot plays a tactical style which emphasizes team build-up rather than playing for counter.
Neves fits the profile that suits Slot’s style of play and the Dutch coach has a reputation to enhance players. A transfer deal could be mutually beneficial for both Liverpool and Neves but negotiating with Benfica is a daunting task.
