Liverpool are in the race to sign £19m-rated German defender Waldemar Anton

As reported by German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Liverpool.com), Liverpool have made an enquiry for £19m-rated German defender, Waldemar Anton. The report states that the Anfield side has already asked Stuttgart for information regarding the player.

The 27-year-old defender was key to VfB Stuttgart’s Bundesliga campaign this past season. It was thanks to his excellence in the backline that the Bundesliga side eclipsed Bayern Munich for the number two spot. To top it all off, this was all done during the closing moments of the season.

Liverpool aren’t the only one showing interest in Anton. German giants, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen have also displayed interest in the player and could be better options since the 27-year-old won’t have to change leagues for them.

Previous season Anton made a total of 37 appearances for Stuttgart with most of them coming at CB. He also filled in at RB when his team needed it the most. Despite starting each game as a defender, Anton was able to produce in the final third and recorded one goal and four assists.

He’s not the strongest neither is he the fastest of defenders in the world. Instead, Anton is smart and positions himself well to defend his team’s goal. He has been a constant nuance to Stuttgart’s opponents thanks to his excellent sense of defensive positioning.

Apart from that the 27-year-old is also a very vocal leader. He has been an excellent captain to his teammates at Stuttgart and any team would love to have a fiery presence like him in their locker rooms. It is safe to say that Anton would be a huge upgrade for Joel Matip.
