Liverpool star should be starting for England says Manchester United icon
Manchester United icon, Paul Ince believes Liverpool star, Trent Alexander-Arnold should be starting for England over young Kobbie Mainoo. The 19-year-old has earned his first call-up for the Three Lions following an impressive campaign for the Red Devils.
Mainoo was one of the best players on the Manchester United lineup this past season. Throughout the year almost everyone on the team went down to injury, but Mainoo persevered and put up performance after performance to solidify himself a spot in the starting XI.
Now he has also found a place for himself in England’s squad. However, Paul Ince believes the 19-year-old still needs more time before he gets to start in the middle line of England’s team, especially when there’s so much talent on the roster. Here’s what he had to say about the situation. (h/t Manchester World)
“Is Mainoo ready now? Of course he’s not, he’s still so young”
“I like the idea of maybe putting Trent in there, alongside Rice. No one else has the passing ability that Trent has. “
Ince went on to say that Trent can easily get the team up the pitch and something good is bound to happen when he does since his options are full of quality. An England team where Trent is consistently feeding players like Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka seems dangerous.
Mainoo has all the talent in the world but doing it for Manchester United on a normal weekend and doing it for your country on the biggest are two very different things. The 19-year-old needs more experience under his belt before he gets to start for the Three Lions.
However, the final decision will be made by Gareth Southgate. The manager has a lot of options to choose, so it’ll be interesting to see who he goes for. Ince mentioned that he would like to see a combination of Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the middle.
