Luis Suarez feels Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez will become one of the world’s best striker
Former Liverpool star Luis Suarez has hailed his compatriot Darwin Nunez as a “very good kid” who will be “one of the best strikers in the world” ahead of the Copa America tournament, as quoted in an interview with AUFTV (h/t The Daily Mirror).
Darwin Nunez has shown his respect and love towards Luis Suarez ahead of Copa America by vacating his No.9 jersey for the great Uruguayan striker while taking the No.19 instead. Both the strikers have been called up to the national team squad by manager Marcelo Bielsa, whose Uruguayan side will lock horns with Panama, USA and Bolivia in Group C.
Nunez, 24, has been preparing well for the tournament, netting a quick-fire hat-trick against Mexico earlier this month. The Liverpool striker gave Marcelo Bielsa’s side the lead early in the game before grabbing his second and third right after the break.
Ahead of Uruguay’s group-stage opener against Panama on June 24, Luis Suarez feels Nunez displayed the “greatness and humility” of a player who will eventually become “one of the best in the world”.
“He [Nunez], with the humility that he has, a very good kid, said ‘no, Luis, you’re the No. 9, I’m going to respect you when you’re not there if I’m going to grab it’”, Suarez waxed lyrical about Nunez while speaking to AUFTV (h/t The Daily Mirror).
“Those are details that demonstrate the greatness and humility of a player who is going to be one of the best, if not [already] one of the best in the world today.”
Nunez has struggled for consistency at Liverpool since his €71m move from Benfica in 2022, but the performance against Mexico in the recent friendly fixture was the kind of clinical display that fans are craving to see from him. He showed flashes of his potential last season, scoring 11 goals and supplying eight assists in 36 Premier League appearances.

There is still a lot to be desired from the Uruguayan centre-forward that made him such a sought-after commodity when Liverpool came calling for his signature. Let’s hope Arne Slot works his magic and transforms Nunez into a goalscoring monster at Anfield.
