Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr want to make Virgil van Dijk the highest-paid defender in the world
According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool are yet to be contacted by Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr over signing their skipper Virgil van Dijk this summer.
Virgil van Dijk, 32, is set to enter the final year of his contract at Liverpool and talks over a renewal have been stalled. The cash-rich Saudi Pro League continue monitoring the Netherlands international’s situation at Anfield after the departure of Jurgen Klopp and plans to make him one of their high-profile captures of the summer transfer window.
Al-Nassr, among the Saudi Pro League clubs, are reportedly ready to make Virgil van Dijk the highest-paid defender in the world. Regardless of rumours that Al-Nassr making contact with the Liverpool star defender’s representatives about a possible move, the Athletic claims that the Merseyside club have not discussed a deal as of now.
New Liverpool boss Arne Slot is preparing to make an impression in the transfer market, and while he wants to reinforce different areas of the squad, it is understood Van Dijk, who will turn 33 in July, remains a key figure in his plans despite interest from the Middle East.
Van Dijk was back to his sublime best for Liverpool last season, guiding his team to a third-place finish in the Premier League and the Carabao Cup success. The Liverpool skipper is currently with the Netherlands national team for the 2024 European Championships and any decision on his future is expected to happen after the tournament.
The 32-year-old would become a free agent next year if no new deal is agreed with the club, which should worry the Kop faithful. Van Dijk’s current situation appears tricky and needs resolving quickly, considering his importance to the club and the direction they are heading under new manager Arne Slot.
Slot would not want to lose such a colossal figure in Van Dijk just before he starts his era at Anfield. However, Saudi’s concrete interest in the Dutch defender should slightly concern his compatriot, who wants to sign a new defender in this window.
