Report: Barcelona waiting to sell Raphinha to fund money for sought-after Liverpool star
Barcelona sporting director Deco prefers Liverpool’s Luis Diaz over Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams for a summer transfer. The Catalan giants want to bolster their left flank by signing Diaz despite facing financial issues to finalize the deal this summer.
Barcelona could fund the transfer deal by selling their player with Raphinha linked with a potential exit this summer. However, any negotiation with Liverpool will be hard for the Spanish club as both the club and the players are happy.
Diaz has played as a regular first-team starter for Jurgen Klopp last season despite ups and downs with season-long form. Personal problems involving his parents’ kidnapping and former injury played a role in his struggle with consistency for the Reds.
Criticism have often pointed out his inability to be productive in front of the goal despite having immense attacking flair. The Colombian international also struggled with the language barrier during his tenure at the club but insisted that he is happy.
Diaz is a fan favourite with his style of play that has dazzled the Anfield crowd and his work ethic. The Colombia international made 51 appearances for Liverpool last season, contributing 13 goals and providing five assists in all competitions.
According to Spanish publication Diario Sport, Barcelona’s sporting director prefers Diaz as they highlighted the need to sign a left-winger. Barcelona are pursuing Athletic’s Williams, but his inexperience compared to Diaz’s proven track record makes the latter a more attractive option. The report states that the Reds have placed a price close to 75 million Euros that justifies his importance.
Diaz’s father fueled the transfer rumours during the last season when he admitted Diaz’s love for Barcelona. The 27-year-old has maintained his commitment with the Reds but so many factors could change the situation quickly.
New head coach Arne Slot inherited a fantastic squad from Klopp this summer and Diaz is a big part. The Reds need to quickly operate in the transfer market amid this transition period to prepare for the upcoming season.
