Chelsea striker search could spur £9million windfall for Liverpool

Liverpool could earn close to £9m if Chelsea triggers Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke’s £65m release clause

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Liverpool could be set for a transfer windfall if Dominic Solanke leaves Bournemouth this summer amid interest from Chelsea.

Dominic Solanke, 26, joined Bournemouth from Liverpool in the summer of 2019 for an initial £19m and has since grown into a reliable marksman in the Premier League. The 2023/24 turned out to be the Englishman’s best season in the Premier League by far, as he netted 19 goals and supplied three assists on top of that in 38 appearances for the Cherries.

Yet, he was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the 2024 European Championships, with the likes of Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney getting the nod ahead of him. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old’s form has alerted bigger clubs in the English top flight, including his former club Chelsea.

The Daily Mirror reports Chelsea are prioritising signing a new striker this summer, with Dominic Solanke at the apex of their shortlist. The English centre-forward’s contract until 2027 includes a £65m release clause, and Liverpool are owed 20 per cent of any profit margin Bournemouth receive for him.

Keeping that in mind, the report adds that the Reds would be owed around £9m should Chelsea trigger Solanke’s 65m release clause.

Liverpool had paid a £3m compensation fee to sign Solanke from Chelsea back in 2017. The move didn’t work out for the striker at Liverpool, scoring just once in 27 appearances. However, the 26-year-old has blossomed into a fine goalscorer for the Cherries after being signed by current Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes.

After a strong 2023/24 season, Bournemouth will be well within their rights to demand Chelsea to pay their star striker’s full release clause. This would in turn help in boosting Liverpool’s summer transfer kitty, as new manager Arne Slot looks to make a mark at Anfield.

The £9m windfall would come in handy in a transfer window when we are heading into a new era. Arne Slot needs quality signings through the door this summer to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal for the Premier League title.

There are several positions to strengthen across the squad and the onus will be on sporting director Richard Hughes to identify gems in the market and bring them to the red side of Merseyside.
