Paris Saint-Germain wants to beat Liverpool to sign Feyenoord fullback Lutsharel Geertruida during the summer transfer window

Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida is a transfer target for Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain during the summer transfer window. Geertruida played a crucial role for Arne Slot when the new Reds head coach managed Feyenoord last season.

Liverpool wants to bolster their defensive position and allow Trent Alexander-Arnold to transition into the midfield role if required. The Reds conceded many early goals last season and shifted Trent centrally, which helped them achieve numerous comeback victories.

Geertruida’s addition could allow Liverpool to use the versatility of Trent and Conor Bradley while also letting them compete. While Trent played as an inverted fullback and as a central midfielder last season, Bradley played as a conventional fullback.

Bradley could also play in several positions at the right flank and he is also capable of dropping centrally. Furthermore, Geertruida’s addition would potentially solve multiple positional problems with his versatility while adding a good competitive depth to the squad.

According to the French publication FootMercato, PSG wants Geertruida to play as a backup for Achraf Hakimi next season. Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reported Liverpool’s desire to sign Geertruida from Feyenoord and reunite him with Slot.

Player analysis: Lutsharel Geertruida

As mentioned before, Geertruida solves problems in multiple positions due to his incredible versatility and adaptability without dropping his consistency. Standing at 1.84 metres, the Dutchman played mostly as a right-back last season and dropped invert to influence the game.

The 23-year-old can also play as a centre-back, left-back and defensive midfielder with ease and influence the game effectively. Geertruida has the physical pace, strength and stamina to cover significant distances and win duels on both ground and aerially.

The Dutch international stays disciplined and uses clever timing to outmanoeuvre opponents in duels, avoiding reckless tackles. He understands Slot’s tactical style of play which relies more on possessional buildup than direct or counter-attacking football.

On possession, Geertruida enjoys a lot of freedom to move invert and go even further like a box-to-box midfielder. Despite going extremely out of his position, he has the recovery pace and sense to return quickly and cancel threats.

The 23-year-old makes many progressive carries and forward passes while maintaining a high percentage of accuracy in passing and linkup plays. His tidiness is one of the pivotal aspects of his game which helped Feyenoord in dominating games.
