Liverpool are interested in signing Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri

According to the Algerian outlet La Gazette du Fennec, Liverpool are interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Reds are set to make changes to their squad over the summer transfer window in a bid to back new manager Arne Slot. While a new signing is yet to arrive, work has already started behind the scenes as the Dutchman aims to enjoy a strong debut season in English football.

While Slot inherits a promising squad, there are still areas on the roster that need addressing. Owing to the release of Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara, a new centre-back and central midfielder could arrive through the front door at Liverpool.

In addition, it looks like the Merseyside giants are keen on recruiting a new left-back, as evidenced by their interest in Rayan Ait-Nouri. Given that Andy Robertson is not getting any younger and Kostas Tsimikas has struggled to overtake him in the pecking order, a dynamic new addition in the role would be welcome this summer.

The Algeria international, 23, turned it around for Wolves last season after a pretty average 2022/23 season, thanks to their manager Gary O’Neil. Predominantly a left-back, Gary O’Neil used him as a wing-back/winger for the majority of the campaign. Ait-Nouri excelled in an advanced role on the left, completing the 2023/24 season with three goals and two assists in 38 games.

La Gazette du Fennec reports that Ait-Nouri now wants to leave Molineux after spending four seasons with Wolves. In addition to Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea also remain keen, with super-agent Jorge Mendes required to do everything possible to get his client a big move this summer.

Robertson endured an injury-hit 2023/24 season at Anfield, with shoulder surgery keeping him on the sidelines for at least four months. This led to the Scot missing large chunks of the season. His deputy at left-back, Kostas Tsimikas too faced fitness issues and was in and out of the team.

Jurgen Klopp was forced to use Joe Gomez as a left-back and, while he did a good job in the role, it is high time the Reds reinforce that area of the squad. Ait-Nouri would be a good fit and has the qualities to be a long-term replacement for Robertson. At 23, the Algerian would be an upgrade on the inconsistent Tsimikas and provide our club with a long-term solution at left-back.

Having captured Jota from Wolves a few summers ago and the deal turning out to be fantastic, Liverpool must not hesitate to raid the Midlands club for Ait-Nouri. Michael Edwards landed then 23-year-old Robertson to revolutionise Liverpool’s left-back spot in 2017. Seven years on, he could repeat the trick with Ait-Nouri.
