Chelsea are the latest Premier League club that wants to sign Liverpool-linked Lille forward Johathan David during the summer window

Liverpool-linked Lille forward Jonathan David is a transfer target for Chelsea and several Premier League clubs during the summer window. Chelsea have contacted David’s representatives over a potential summer move, moving ahead of their Premier League rivals to acquire him.

The 24-year-old is currently representing Canada in the Copa America, completing the full game against Argentina in a 2-0 loss. Liverpool are assessing the squad Arne Slot inherited from Jurgen Klopp before taking action in the transfer market.

The Reds have a strong attacking department but struggled with finishing throughout last season, eventually costing them major trophies. Liverpool cannot afford to let a similar problem reappear next season when Slot implements his somewhat different style of play.

According to the Athletic (via Liverpool Echo), Chelsea have held talks with the representatives of David over a potential move. Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United are vigorously pursuing Canada international David to enhance their attacking lineup.

Player analysis: Jonathan David

Standing at 1.80 metres, David has a good pace and work ethic as a frontman playing in a high-pressing system. The 24-year-old lacks the physicality and the conviction in aerial duels which is his biggest weakness as a main striker.

David has the versatility to play on either wing but last season he maintained his role as the primary striker. The Canada international can also play as a second striker or an attacking midfielder, his secondary role, particularly in front-two.

Lille deployed a 4-3-3 formation and enjoyed harnessing David’s primary ability as a lethal finisher with strong composure and technique. With respect to his movements, the 24-year-old is different from the players that Liverpool have in the squad right now.

While Liverpool forwards like Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota exploit spaces with movements too, David heavily relies on linkup play. The Canadian has good passing ability alongside his linkup play and is a strong ball carrier in the short distance.

While David’s finishing skills and versatility on the field are essential assets for Liverpool, it’s unclear whether he aligns with Slot’s vision. However, the 24-year-old is still behind the attackers Liverpool already possess in the overall play and effectiveness.
