Liverpool boss Arne Slot’s reluctance to sign Lutsharel Geertruida hands Tottenham Hotspur a transfer boost

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has disapproved a move for Lutsharel Geertruida, handing Tottenham Hotspur a significant boost in their pursuit of the Feyenoord star.

The Reds are heading into a new era following Jurgen Klopp’s departure after nine years at the helm. Klopp has been replaced by the well-respected Arne Slot, who guided Feyenoord to two major honours in three years.

Since Arne Slot took over as Liverpool’s manager, several Feyenoord stars have been linked with a move to Anfield. One of those is Lutsharel Geertruida, who, on the back of a strong 2023/24 season, has attracted interest from several clubs, including Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain, and RB Leipzig.

After coming up through the youth ranks at Feyenoord, Netherlands international Lutsharel Geertruida, 23, has gone from strength to strength in recent years, developing into a reliable defender for the club. He has become a mainstay at the Rotterdam-based club and recorded an impressive 14-goal contributions in his 47 outings last season as Arne Slot’s side finished second in the Eredivisie.

Off the back of his consistent performances for Feyenoord, Geertruida has been called up to the national team for the ongoing 2024 Euros. Despite Geertruida’s rise in stock, the Daily Mirror claims Slot remains unsure of making the defender his first summer signing at Liverpool.

The new Reds boss rates Geertruida very highly but does not want to repeat the mistake made by his compatriot Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, who signed several players from the Eredivisie. Slot is likely cautious of over-relying on players from a single league, especially considering the different demands of the Premier League.

Slot’s hesitancy to sign Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida has now made Tottenham the favourites to land him. Spurs have regularly scouted Geertruida last season and remain confident of bringing him to North London instead of Paris Saint-Germain or RB Leipzig. More so, RB Leipzig tried to sign the 23-year-old last summer but saw their offer worth £25 million rejected, as Feyenoord wanted a fee of around £35 million.

Tottenham’s proactive approach and consistent interest put them in a strong position to secure Geertruida’s signature. His versatility and defensive prowess would be a valuable addition to Spurs’ backline, providing them with the quality needed to compete at the top level. It remains to be seen if we will come to regret passing on him like with Micky van de Ven last summer.

Geertruida is one of the hottest defensive prospects in the Netherlands and it is no surprise why he is linked with several top clubs across Europe. With the 23-year-old capable of featuring as a full-back, central defender and even as a defensive midfielder, he could have been a fantastic signing for Liverpool who need defensive reinforcements this summer.

However, Slot’s indecisiveness in bringing one of his former Feyenoord players to the red half of Merseyside in his first very summer transfer window means we must swiftly switch our focus to other targets.
