Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia is on Liverpool radar

According to a report from the Liverpool ECHO, Liverpool have shown an interest in RCD Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia amidst a potential shakeup in the goalkeeping department ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The goalkeeping unit is expected to undergo changes this summer, as new manager Arne Slot prepares his squad for his debut season at Anfield. Alisson Becker, the club’s undisputed No.1, has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, while Adrian is closing in on a switch back to Spain with Real Betis after rejecting a new contract. Caoimhin Kelleher’s future at the club is also uncertain as he admitted his desire to become a No.1 and play regularly amid interest from Celtic.

Both Kelleher and Adrian are looking for more regular opportunities after being second and third choices respectively at Anfield in recent seasons. If they both depart the red half of Merseyside, then the club will need to sign two new shot-stoppers to replace them.

RCD Espanyol’s Joan Garcia has emerged as a target for Liverpool, but the Liverpool ECHO states our club could face competition from Arsenal and Real Madrid. The Spanish shot-stopper, who is valued at €25million, helped RCD Espanyol earn promotion to La Liga in May.

He has emerged as one of the best young goalkeepers in Spain after a strong campaign with Espanyol. Despite not being Espanyol’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper, Garcia enjoyed the best season in his fledgling career, keeping 12 sheets in 21 games across all competitions. Having only had his breakthrough in March, he played a key role in helping the Catalan club secure promotion back to La Liga through the play-offs after a 2-1 aggregate victory over Real Oviedo.

The 23-year-old is contracted to Espanyol until 2028, but that hasn’t stopped several clubs from keeping tabs on his situation at the newly promoted La Liga side. Liverpool appear to be one of those due to the current goalkeeping situation.

With Adrian’s exit very likely, the attention turns towards Kelleher. Having deputised extremely well in the injury absence of Alisson in the second half of last season, Kelleher dreams of becoming a No.1—either at Liverpool or else. Due to Alisson’s presence, chances of the Northern Irishman fulfilling his dream at Anfield are pretty slim.

So, if Kelleher decides to leave as well, we must go for Garcia as his replacement to compete with Alisson next season.
