Uruguay boss defends Liverpool star amid persistent media toxicity

Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa defends Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez as the forward continues the prolific goalscoring run for his country

Darwin Nunez has continued his prolific goalscoring run with Uruguay in Copa America as Marcelo Bielsa defended his Liverpool form. Nunez faced relentless and at times toxic criticism for wasting too many chances for the Reds during the last season.

Despite the constant media attack and bad narration about the player, the core Liverpool fanbase has continuously supported the forward. The Kopites realise the overall contribution that Darwin delivers for the team irrespective of his struggles with goals and offsides.

The 25-year-old’s remarkable poaching ability and form for his national team highlight that he works best with confidence and positivity. English media persist in scrutinizing Liverpool forwards, and many Kopites believe they are targeting Nunez by association.

At the same time, some criticisms are constructive and they usually come with mitigating factors like the language barrier. Despite his struggles, the Uruguayan scored 18 goals and provided 13 assists from 54 Liverpool appearances in all competitions last season.

Bielsa defended Nunez’s Liverpool form during his press conference (via ESPN) as the forward continues his fantastic international form. He said:

“Darwin is a player who doesn’t need any kind of support. You have to know what it means to play for Liverpool and who he competes with, and what his cycles were like, when he scored, when he stopped scoring, why he stopped scoring. These are things that he manages in proportion to the place he occupies in world football. Arguing, which I don’t know if that’s what actually happens, to a player like him. The only thing that worries me is that he is in a position to do what he does so extraordinarily as often as possible, which is to convert, define, finish the actions, choose where to direct the shot that he is able to execute . ”

Nunez has the remarkable ability to singlehandedly tilt the games as he showed for the 10-man Liverpool against Newcastle United. The Uruguayan’s physical prowess and technical ability alongside his hardworking mentality make him a handful for opponents to deal with.

New coach Arne Slot succeeded Jurgen Klopp recently and the Reds hierarchy believes in the Dutchman’s ability to harness Nunez. Slot plays a vastly different style of play compared to Klopp and even Bielsa but Nunez has the adaptable qualities.

The biggest issues that the Uruguayan has faced are the language barrier and the toxic media witch-hunt against him. Nunez made drastic changes to counter the latter which created a lot of controversies before last season ended.

However, the fanbase understood his decisions and only wanted him to prove his doubters wrong on the football field. Hopefully, the language barrier will no longer play any factor as Nunez plays his third season with the Reds. The 25-year-old has incredible hunger and desire which can bolster Liverpool as they usher a new era under Slot.
