Liverpool handed huge boost as Barcelona pull out of the race for European superstar
Barcelona have reportedly cooled down their interest in Joshua Kimmich, handing Liverpool a boost in their pursuit of the Bayern Munich star.
Former Blaugrana manager Xavi Hernandez was keen on bringing Joshua Kimmich to the club but the interest has gone cold since he departed earlier this summer. He has been replaced by Hansi Flick, who knows Kimmich very well from his time at Bayern Munich, but Barcelona president Joan Laporta has other midfield targets in mind—such as Real Sociedad’s Mikel Merino and Everton’s Amadou Onana.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Bayern Munich are ready to cash in on Kimmich this summer amid interest from a host of top Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.
The 29-year-old is the skipper of Bayern and has been a mainstay in the side for many years. The German’s contract expires next summer (Transfermarkt) but the Bavarian giants have no plans to extend it, which means they risk losing him on a free transfer in 2025.
The aforementioned report claims Bayern have set a price tag of €30 million to €40m for the player. There is a big possibility that Kimmich will leave the club this summer, and Barcelona’s reluctance to intensify their efforts in signing him has brought the Premier League clubs into the fold. However, no decision has been made on his future thus far and no further news is expected until after Germany’s participation at the 2024 Euro is over.
Barcelona taking a step back in the chase for Kimmich is good news for Liverpool. The release of Thiago Alcantara at the end of last season leaves a spot vacant in the Reds’ squad, which new manager Arne Slot must fill in without fail.
Kimmich, in that regard, would be an ideal player to potentially replace Thiago in the Liverpool squad. Even if their profiles are very different, Kimmich would bring a winning mentality and European experience which the Merseyside outfit lost following the exit of Thiago. In addition, the Germany international can also operate in midfield and at right-back, and such versatility would be a boon for Arne Slot heading into the 2024/25 season.
For a proven winner with leadership skills and volumes of experience at the highest level, €30m to €40m fee represents a bargain that we must pay for Kimmich’s signature.
