Liverpool have shown an interest in signing Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili
Liverpool have reportedly entered the race for the signing of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer.
The Reds are embarking on a new era following the appointment of Arne Slot, who has replaced Jurgen Klopp in the managerial hotseat. They might be looking for several outfield signings but new manager Arne Slot could now be in with a chance to land one of Europe’s highly-rated goalkeepers.
And that goalkeeper is Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has been starring for Georgia at the ongoing Euros in Germany. The 23-year-old has been fantastic in the competition and has helped Georgia into the last 16. The shot-stopper produced a series of key saves to help his nation beat Portugal 2-0 in their final group-stage fixture to clinch a spot in the Euros’ knockout rounds.
According to Radio MARCA (h/t The Liverpool ECHO), Newcastle United have the most concrete interest in signing Mamardashvili from Valencia. However, Liverpool also have an opportunity to sign the Georgia international if their No.1 Alisson Becker departs this summer.
Alisson Becker has been one of the world’s best goalkeepers for some years now, delivering the goods consistently for Liverpool since arriving from AS Roma in 2018. He has been a pillar at the back for both club and country. Currently with the Brazil national team at the Copa America, the 31-year-old produced a strong display to help his nation beat Paraguay 4-1 in the group stage on Saturday morning.
However, Alisson has reportedly attracted interest from the cash-rich Saudi Arabia in recent weeks. Of course, the Brazil international remains committed to Liverpool and Arne Slot will be fully expecting to start the 2024/25 campaign with him in goal. However, should the Saudi Pro League clubs intensify their efforts and our No.1 decides to leave Anfield this summer, then the Reds will need to invest in a top-quality goalkeeper as his replacement.
Mamardashvili, in that regard, would be a top option. He was excellent in an otherwise underwhelming campaign for Valencia, keeping 13 clean sheets in 37 La Liga games. The Georgian’s glowing reputation has been enhanced by his performances at the European Championships, and after a pretty good year for both club and country, he may decide to leave the Mestalla Stadium for newer pastures.

It would be difficult to persuade Mamardashvili into joining our club if Alisson stays as he’d obviously harbour hopes of becoming the No.1 at a new club and playing regularly. So, as things stand, it is a waiting game for Liverpool.
