Liverpool eyes major swoop for Newcastle forward amid financial pressure

Liverpool want Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon as the Profit and Sustainability rule continues to put pressure on the Magpies

Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon is a transfer target for Liverpool as the Profit and Sustainability rule has the Magpies shackled. Liverpool wants a wide forward during the summer window to bolster their attack and Gordon fits their desired profile.

Newcastle have spent enormous transfer money since Saudi Arabia’s wealthy Public Investment Fund secured 80 per cent of Newcastle’s ownership. However, they missed out on the chance to qualify for European competitions, further escalating their problems and losing more negotiation leverage.

The Magpies failed to make recruitment during January due to their PSR position and they need to sell top assets. Gordon is currently representing England in the Euro 2024 competition but enjoyed limited game time due to Gareth Southgate’s persistent favouritism.

According to HITC (via Liverpool Echo), Liverpool wants Gordon during the summer to bolster their attack department. The Reds need a quality wide attacker who is capable of being productive for them in the final third.

Despite progressing through Everton’s rank before joining Newcastle, Gordon has given strong hints that he is a childhood Liverpool fan. The England international has riled the Liverpool crowd whenever he played against the club, showcasing the impact he can make.

Player analysis: Anthony Gordon

Standing at 1.82 metres, Gordon has the pace, stamina, agility and upper-body strength to challenge any opponent in physical duels. The 23-year-old showcases impressive pace, dribbling ability, and close control, utilizing his strong technical skills to deliver accurate shots.

Gordon covers long distances with the ball with his blistering pace and predicts the defender’s counter-moves to beat them effectively. The Englishman has game intelligence, good decision-making and works hard for his team on and off the ball.

Gordon’s off-the-ball movement and constant desire to be the main threat allows him to be consistent and hungry for success. The 23-year-old would command a huge price tag after his impressive first season with the Magpies but he is worth the price. Gordon adds to the homegrown quota with his age and good injury record to be a long-term first-team solution for Liverpool.
