Stefan Bajcetic
Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic has reportedly not been called up to Spain’s squad for the upcoming Olympic games in Paris, France.
The teenager enjoyed his breakout campaign at Liverpool in 2022/23, racking up 26 appearances across all competitions. There were high hopes from him heading into the 2023//24 campaign after a breakout year. However, things just didn’t go as per the way he would have planned.
Stefan Bajcetic endured a horrible past season, with a recurrent calf injury halting his progress. The defensive midfielder managed to return from injury in April but could only muster 25 minutes in the Reds’ 4-2 home win over Tottenham Hotspur. Eventually, he finished the campaign with just three senior appearances across all formats for Liverpool.
The youngster has been playing for Spain’s Under-21s over the past few months, which has encouraged ideas that he may get selected for the Olympic games. However, according to the Liverpool ECHO, Bajcetic has been left out of Spain’s 22-man squad for the pre-Olympic games training camp.
This should be good news from Liverpool’s perspective, given Bajcetic has missed the majority of action over the last 15 months. His participation with the Spain national team for the Olympic games, which run from July 24 to August 9, would have resulted in the youngster missing the bulk of the club’s pre-season tour.
Instead, the Spaniard will get an opportunity to build his fitness and work under new manager Arne Slot. Bajcetic will be now getting time to focus fully on the upcoming pre-season tour and make up for the lost time with Liverpool.
The club’s pre-season friendlies will give the 19-year-old the chance to get much-needed game time and subsequently build match fitness, having played just 99 minutes last season. Bajcetic is still a raw talent, who despite getting good exposure to first-team football under Jurgen Klopp, needs to be managed carefully to avoid further injury issues.
The Spanish youth international is one hell of a talent but needs to stay fit if he is to fulfil his sky-high potential. While he may be disappointed to not get selected by his national team for the Olympic games, if we look at the bigger and brighter picture, it is positive news as Bajcetic can impress Arne Slot when the pre-season begins next month and make himself available for Liverpool’s season-opener away at newly-promoted Ipswich Town on August 17.
