Stan Collymore wants his former club Liverpool to focus on strengthening the left-back position

Former England international Stan Collymore has tipped Liverpool to invest in a new left-back in this ongoing summer transfer window.

A fortnight into the transfer window, Liverpool are yet to make any new signings to help kickstart the Arne Slot era. The hunt for quality acquisitions continues, as Arne Slot looks to rebuild the squad that finished third in the Premier League in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield.

The Reds are planning to reinforce various areas of the squad, with the defence reportedly considered the topmost priority. A new back-up goalkeeper may also be on the agenda, considering Adrian has rejected a new contract and wants to return to Spain and Celtic’s interest in Caoimhin Kelleher.

Ex-Red Stan Collymore feels the squad Arne Slot inherited from Jurgen Klopp has got enough quality in midfield and attack, as well as at right-back with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley as options. However, he isn’t convinced with left-back cover for Andy Robertson and wants Liverpool to dip into the market for a new player.

“For me, they’ve got enough up top, they’ve got enough midfielders, right-back is well covered in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Conor Bradley. Maybe some left-back cover?” Collymore wrote in his latest column for CaughtOffside.

“I just don’t see some of the names that have been touted at Liverpool, unless one’s a left-back or burgeoning central defender. I don’t think that Liverpool need very much at all.”

Arne Slot and Liverpool must be aware of the positions that require strengthening in this transfer window. As Collymore rightly stated, a new left-back must come in that would be an upgrade on the inconsistent Kostas Tsimikas. The Greece international failed to make the most of his chances during Andy Robertson’s long-term injury last season and should be moved on.

A young, talented and attacking left-back to cover and push Robertson next season has to be prioritised after a centre-back. That brings Wolverhampton Wanderers star Rayan Ait-Nouri into the fold.

The Algeria international is reportedly on the club’s radar and would be a smashing addition to Arne Slot’s defensive ranks. At 23, he would be a smart option to compete with Robertson and eventually replace him as the club’s first-choice left-back in the future.

Considering the problems we faced at left-back during the 2023/24 season, it would be in the club’s best interests to recruit a specialist player in that position.
