Riccardo Calafiori has impressed Liverpool and Real Madrid with his performance in Euro 2024

The European Championship has significantly enhanced the profile of Liverpool target, Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. Despite Italy’s early exit from Euro 2024, failing to reach the quarterfinals, Calafiori’s performances during the tournament drew attention from several top-tier European clubs, complicating Liverpool’s efforts to secure his signature.

Calafiori’s impressive season with Bologna, where he transitioned from his usual position as a left-back to a centre-back under the guidance of then-manager Thiago Motta, has been a critical factor in his rising stock. His adaptability and strong displays both domestically and internationally have marked him as a player of interest for clubs looking to strengthen their defence, putting Liverpool in a competitive position to negotiate for his services.

Calafiori’s transition to a centre-back role at Bologna proved to be a masterstroke, as he quickly established himself as one of the top defenders in Serie A. His significant contribution to Bologna’s defensive solidity, which saw the team concede only 32 goals last season, underscored his value. This performance was a pivotal factor in his selection for Italy’s Euro 2024 squad, where his market value continued to climb.

During the group stage of the tournament, Calafiori started all three matches for Italy and delivered standout performances, including a crucial assist against Croatia that secured Italy’s advancement to the Round of 16. His dynamic play has caught the eye of several additional clubs across Europe.

Liverpool will face tough competition

After Jurgen Klopp’s departure, Liverpool fans have been understandably anxious about the future direction of the club. However, the appointment of Arne Slot as the new manager has provided some reassurance. Slot, a professed admirer of the Reds, brings a deep understanding of the team’s dynamics and player capabilities, which is essential for a smooth transition.

Slot is expected to prioritize strengthening the defensive lineup this summer, acknowledging the challenges faced last season under Klopp. The defence struggled with consistency, heavily reliant on Virgil van Dijk due to Joel Matip’s injury and other fluctuating performances. By focusing on bolstering this area, Slot aims to build a more resilient and reliable backline, addressing one of the team’s most pressing needs as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Liverpool are in for a new centre-back this summer

Last season, Liverpool faced challenges in their defensive lineup, as Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez did not meet expectations, leading Jurgen Klopp to rely heavily on Jarell Quansah alongside Virgil van Dijk. Recognizing the need for more experienced and reliable defenders, Riccardo Calafiori emerges as an ideal candidate for Arne Slot to solidify the backline. His proven ability at both club and international levels makes him a highly desirable addition.

However, Liverpool is set to face stiff competition for Calafiori’s signature. According to Gazzetta, Arsenal, Juventus, Tottenham, and even European champions Real Madrid have expressed interest in the Italian defender. Real Madrid’s involvement could significantly drive up Calafiori’s price, potentially putting him out of reach for other clubs and complicating Liverpool’s pursuit. This intensified bidding war underscores the high demand for top defensive talents in European football and the challenges teams face in securing such assets amidst financial and competitive pressures.
