Liverpool handed a boost in their pursuit of Juventus youngster Dean Huijsen

According to German sports magazine Kicker, Liverpool have been boosted in their hopes of landing highly-rated Juventus defender Dean Huijsen after Bayer Leverkusen dropped their interest.

After a successful loan spell with AS Roma during the second half of the last season, where he scored two goals and registered an assist in 14 appearances in Serie A, the youngster’s potential has become increasingly evident. One of the promising youngsters on Juventus’ books, Dean Huijsen managed to gain some valuable experience with AS Roma and now could make the jump to a bigger club.

The teenager has several admirers across Europe, including Liverpool, who are in the market for defensive reinforcements. The aforementioned report claims that Huijsen will only come into Bayer Leverkusen’s consideration if they lose multiple centre-backs this summer, which at this point looks highly unlikely to happen.

The young centre-back, despite only playing 14 league games for Roma on loan, is valued at between €25 to €30 million. The Old Lady, under new manager Thiago Motta, could be forced to sacrifice the Spain Under-21 international’s services in order to fund their transfer campaign, something Liverpool must look to take advantage of.

The Reds lost Joel Matip on a free transfer at the end of the last campaign, leaving new manager Arne Slot with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez as centre-back options.

With Van Dijk turning 33 later this month and in the final year of his contract, Konate unreliable as a starter owing to his injury issues and Quansah only breaking into the first team this past season, the Merseyside outfit would be wise to invest in a young centre-back and groom him.

Virgil van Dijk is not getting any younger and has entered the final year of his contract at Liverpool.

Huijsen, in that regard, fits the bill perfectly. In just six months at Roma, the defender proved himself to be a reliable performer and he is only going to get better with the right coaching, maturity and experience. The Amsterdam-born prodigy has the mix of technical skills and physical attributes to thrive in the hustle and bustle of Premier League football.

Renowned for his ability to nurture young talent during his time in the Netherlands, Arne Slot could play a significant role in luring Huijsen to Liverpool. For a player of Huijsen’s talent and ceiling supposedly available in the bracket of €25 to €30 million, Liverpool must be all over his signature before Bayer Leverkusen revives their interest.
