Luke Edwards: Liverpool have turned Anthony Gordon’s head

Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards has revealed that Newcastle United are concerned about the state of mind of Liverpool-linked Anthony Gordon. The Magpies denied Gordon a chance to join his boyhood club after the clubs failed to conclude a negotiation involving him.

Edwards tells a different story about Liverpool’s failed negotiation for Gordon, contradicting the public account. According to BBC, Newcastle approached Liverpool with the opportunity to sign Gordon in a deal involving Jarell Quansah alongside cash.

The Reds turned down an offer that included one of their top young players, a promising defensive talent considered a future star. However, Edwards provided a different story claiming Liverpool approached the Magpies and offered either Joe Gomez or Quansah plus cash.

The story is highly doubtful considering the important role that Gomez played for Liverpool last season during their injury crisis. Furthermore, Quansah’s steep rise in the senior team and his high potential make him as untouchable as other top assets.

Nevertheless, the Telegraph journalist’s insight into Gordon’s state of mind is a very interesting development for Liverpool. The 23-year-old has delivered many hints in his recent interviews which suggested his soft sport for Liverpool despite Everton’s affiliation.

Gordon joined the Magpies last summer and delivered a highly productive season for them despite their struggles. Newcastle missed the European qualification which has hurt their finances even further with the pressure of profit and sustainability rules.

However, the sales of Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest have saved them. The question remains about the future of Gordon despite Newcastle’s desire to keep one of their top assets.

At the same time, Liverpool have a strong left wing with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo as primary options for them. Gordon prefers the left-wing position despite having the versatility to play at any attacking position as required by the team. The Reds may still try to sign the player from Newcastle if Diaz chooses to join Barcelona, his boyhood club that wants him this summer.
