Liverpool are ready to battle Brighton and other Premier League clubs to sign Feyenoord defensive midfielder Mats Wieffer this summer

This summer, Feyenoord midfielder Mats Wieffer is a transfer target for Liverpool, Brighton, and several other Premier League clubs. Wieffer played a crucial role in midfield for the Dutch club under new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot last season.

The 24-year-old stood out at Feyenoord alongside highly coveted players like Lutsharel Geertruida and Quinten Timber. Wieffer played as the main defensive midfielder for Feyenoord, influencing the game in both defensive, offensive and overall possessional buildup.

Feyenoord finished second last season despite acquiring more points than they did during the title-winning 2022-23 season under Slot. They won the KNVB cup last season, beating the high-spending Eredivisie champion and dominant PSV Eindhoven side.

The Dutch international played 42 games last season in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing four assists for Feyenoord. Wieffer enjoyed strong development and a rise in his reputation under the guidance of Slot as one of his successful projects.

According to HITC (via Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are battling Brighton to sign Wieffer from Feyenoord during the summer transfer window. Aston Villa, Brentford and Fulham are the other Premier League clubs targeting the 24-year-old to bolster their midfield.

Player analysis: Mats Wieffer

Standing at 1.88 metres, Wieffer has an imposing presence in the midfield with strong physical strength, stamina and aerial ability.  The 24-year-old has an incredible positioning sense as he anticipates the attacking opponents well to intercept, tackle and block them.

The Dutch international shields the spaces between the midfield and the defence well to negate any use of channels. On possession, he plays a key role in bringing the ball forward from the backline under Slot’s possessional-based football.

Wieffer has the passing ability and the agility to move out of the tight spaces in midfield to continue buildup. Slot allows Wieffer to venture forward which played a crucial role in his high productivity, transitioning into a box-to-box midfielder.

Liverpool have limited defensive midfield options with only Stefan Bajcetic and Wataru Endo as the natural players in that position. Wieffer fits the profile perfectly and his history with Slot is another advantage for the Dutchman to adapt quickly.
