Cody Gakpo thanked the support system at Liverpool as he continues to shine for the Netherlands in the Euro 2024

The Netherlands star Cody Gakpo praised the support system at Liverpool as he continues to dominate in the Euro 2024. Gakpo has helped the Dutch reach the quarter-finals after helping them beat Romania 3-0 in the last 16 in Euro.

The 25-year-old consistently starts for his national team as a left-wing attacker, delivering standout performances as their top player. Gakpo’s impressive performance has him lined up as one of the top candidates for the Player of the Tournament award.

The Dutch international has scored three goals and provided an assist from four games in the Euro competition so far. Gakpo delivered similar consistent high-quality performances for Liverpool when the team struggled and suffered an anticlimactic end to the season.

Before the March international break, the 25-year-old faced severe criticism for his poor performances and limited productivity for the Reds. Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp accepted his fault in Gakpo’s struggle as he played in several different positions last season.

The Dutchman played as a left-winger, right-winger, attacking midfielder, centre-forward and central midfielder to fill the gaps in the team. Liverpool struggled with a severe injury crisis throughout the last season which forced Klopp to play him in many positions.

However, Klopp shifted Gakpo to his favourable left-wing position and the attacker delivered sensational performances until the season ended. Many players suffer from criticism that usually goes beyond the realm of being “constructive” in toxic social media.

Gakpo, on the other hand, displayed his strong mentality and hunger to prove his naysayers wrong while building consistency. Speaking in a press conference (via Liverpoolfc.com), Gakpo highlighted the support system at Liverpool, helping him through the tough times. He said:

“Those moments are normal for a player, it’s not always going very well and going the way you like. Sometimes you have a spell [where] things don’t go your way but, to be honest, I have a great team at Liverpool, great people that always are there for me and for everybody when you have those moments. They kept believing in me, kept helping me with everything. I think the last, I don’t know how many, games of the season at the club I played also good games. I just took that with me and kept working very hard. I’m very happy that I can be of value for the team.”

Liverpool fans are excited to see Gakpo continue his magnificent performances from the Euro and take them into the next season. The Dutchman will play under new head coach Arne Slot and the tactical shift under the manager from the same nation could benefit him further.
