Arne Slot is looking to lure Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool
According to a report from German publication BILD, Liverpool are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong.
New Reds’ boss Arne Slot wants to make an impression on the squad that finished third in the Premier League in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield. He is yet to make a summer signing, though, but is working hard behind the scenes along with new sporting director Richard Hughes to get deals done before the 2024/25 campaign kicks off.
It is hardly a surprise that Liverpool are taking their time to sign players this summer, as Arne Slot needs time to evaluate the squad he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from rolling, however.
The aforementioned report claims Arne Slot has spoken directly with Jeremie Frimpong over a potential move to Liverpool. The Liverpool manager was in Germany to watch the Netherlands beat Romania 3-0 in the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championships earlier this week and is understood to have established contact with the Bayer Leverkusen star.
After how things unfolded in the final months of last season, reinforcing the backline has become an absolute necessity for Slot and Liverpool. The Dutch tactician needs to make adjustments to his squad over the summer transfer window if the Reds are to compete for major trophies in the 2024/25 campaign.
While the signing of a central defender is a priority owing to the departure of Joel Matip, a new full-back supposedly appears to be on the club’s wishlist. This is perhaps why the club are interested in Frimpong, who won the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen last season. The diminutive full-back/wing-back was one of Xabi Alonso’s pillars of strength in both defence and attack, helping the Bundesliga side to an undefeated domestic campaign.
The 23-year-old contributed heavily in the final third for Bayer, as evidenced by 14 goals and 12 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions. Due to his attacking prowess, Frimpong would be an excellent fit in Slot’s system at Liverpool. He would bring energy, pace, dynamism, creativity and goals to the red half of Merseyside, whilst adding depth to the squad.

The ex-Celtic man’s potential addition could see Slot use Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield and utilise his creativity on the ball and vision centrally. Thus, the addition of Frimpong may benefit the Reds in many ways. He has a release clause of €40m and for that price, the wing-back would represent a snip in today’s market for Liverpool.
That said, don’t be surprised if Slot’s first summer signing at Anfield turns out to be a Dutchman!
