Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has outlined the club’s approach in this summer transfer window

New Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has revealed that the club will try to become ‘opportunistic’ in this summer transfer window.

Richard Hughes arrived from Bournemouth as the Reds’ new sporting director in a summer of wholesale changes at Anfield. Arne Slot has been appointed as the club’s new head coach, with the Dutchman facing the herculean task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp. Since his appointment, Slot has been in constant contact with Hughes, with the duo outlining their targets for improving the squad over the transfer window.

So far it has been a quiet transfer window for Liverpool with no new signings made so far. Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip have been released upon the expiry of their contracts at the end of June, while Calvin Ramsay has joined Wigan Athletic on loan.

Fans have been waiting with bated breath for the club to kick off their transfer business, as Arne Slot eyes a strong debut season in English football. In Slot’s first press conference as the Liverpool head coach, Hughes praised the Dutchman and stated that Liverpool’s first and foremost priority will be on improving on the training pitch.

“It’s been great to work with Arne,” Hughes said in the presser. (h/t The Liverpool ECHO)

“It was a difficult position at first. We both had jobs to finish. Since then, we’ve been in conversations daily.

“On many things, logistics, organisation and of course preparing the transfer window. That’s something we’ll know more about when we go on.

“We need to improve, we need to improve on the training pitch first and foremost as Arne said. With the window open we’ll always be opportunistic if we can.”

Arne Slot has big boots to fill in at Liverpool as he replaces Jurgen Klopp.

When Klopp left at the end of last season, Liverpool were looking for a like-for-like replacement for the German’s high-pressing and intense style and they settled on Slot. The Dutchman has the unenviable job of replicating the success Klopp enjoyed at Liverpool across nine seasons. While Klopp managed to win only the Carabao Cup in his final season in charge of the Reds, he has left behind a squad that is experienced and has a winning culture for Slot.

The new Liverpool tactician needs to rebuild and not revamp the squad he has inherited from Klopp, and although the fans are waiting to see a flurry of new faces arrive this summer and the club tastes instant success from the word go, the Dutchman and Hughes’ measured approach in the transfer market and focus on quality over quantity is the right way to go about in this period of transition.

Let’s hope the club makes the right decisions in the transfer market and brings in the players that fit in well with Slot’s system. The work has just begun for Hughes and Slot!
