Manchester City have entered the race for Liverpool target Anthony Gordon
Manchester City have registered their interest in one of England’s rising stars, Anthony Gordon who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer.
The 23-year-old, currently away on duty with England at Euro 2024, has caught the eye of both City and Liverpool. According to Football Insider via FourFourTwo, Pep Guardiola and Co. have joined the race to add the versatile attacker to their already stacked roster.
Liverpool, known for their patient approach in the transfer market, had been waiting to strike a deal, but Guardiola’s side could now be poised to disrupt their plans. While a return to Merseyside could appeal to Gordon, how he responds to the opportunity to represent the English champions remains to be seen.

Gordon enjoyed a standout campaign under Eddie Howe in 2023/24, scoring 12 goals and registering 11 assists for Newcastle United across all competitions. His impressive performances have made him a hot commodity in the transfer market. Despite Newcastle’s earlier concerns about adhering to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, their recent deal with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson has alleviated those financial worries.
This development means Newcastle are under no immediate pressure to sell Gordon, adding complexity to City and Liverpool’s pursuit. Any hope Liverpool had of pressing the Magpies to give in remains unlikely. With City also entering the fray, it is likely that a bidding war could entail.
Guardiola has a track record of signing players who can contribute to the team’s success, as evidenced by last season’s acquisitions of Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes, Jeremy Doku, and Josep Gvardiol. Given that the likes of Doku have failed to hit the same heights as Riyad Mahrez, their interest in Gordon is understandable.
A versatile attacker, Gordon would fit in well at Liverpool. A former Academy player at Melwood, the youngster was let go before ending up at Everton. A triumphant return to Anfield would certainly make him public enemy number one at Goodison Park, adding more spice to the Merseyside Derbies top come.
With the future of Luis Diaz up in the air, Liverpool should do all they can to land Gordon. After all, not only will he meet the homegrown quota but also understands what it means to don the jersey as a local hero. With his head already turned, the onus is now on the Reds to ensure they follow through.

While Liverpool’s patient approach has its merits, City’s proactive strategy could give them the edge in securing Gordon’s services. Gordon’s talent and potential make him a valuable asset for any team, and his addition to City would further bolster their already formidable squad. However, Newcastle’s desire to keep Gordon means any deal will require significant negotiation.
Either way, we would not put it beyond Michael Edwards and Co. to work their magic once again if we are serious about securing Gordon’s services.
