Ben Jacobs reveals Liverpool are big fans of Wolves star Joao Gomes
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on the Transfer Mailbag via GiveMeSport, Liverpool are very interested in securing the services of Wolverhampton Wanderers star Joao Gomes.
The Brazilian star joined the Molineux outfit from Flamengo in 2023 and has since established himself as a favourite to the Pack faithful. A relentless midfielder who is not afraid to get stuck in, Gomes is an old-school midfielder who combines his athleticism and physicality with technical prowess to make a difference in the middle of the park.
A defensive midfielder, the 23-year-old is a solid tackler who makes his presence felt in the middle of the park. His energy and no-nonsense attitude would be a welcome addition to the Reds’ midfield roster.
Jacobs believes that the Reds are currently prioritising summer moves for a centre-back and a winger. However, he has refused to rule the Merseysiders out of the running to move for Gomes should an opportunity present itself. This is key given that Arne Slot is sold on the talents of Sepp van den Berg. Should Liverpool retain the Dutchman, they might not need to go big for a centre-back this summer.
“Midfield is not as high on their list of priorities as a centre-back and wide player. But, I don’t think we can entirely rule it out and Liverpool really like Joao Gomes as well, so that could be one to watch in the coming months. But for now, midfield is not the priority.”
This could free up funds that can be used to take advantage of opportunities that might open up. Liverpool Sporting Director, Richard Hughes claimed the same in an interview earlier this week. Adding Gomes to the Reds’ roster will certainly strengthen a core area of the field that the Reds have been lacking over the last two years.
Gomes’s contract at Wolves runs until 2028 with the option of a further year. A fan favourite at the Molineux, Liverpool will need to make a strong offer for Wolves to even consider a sale. With Manchester United also keen, it is unlikely to be a straightforward process.
As things stand, Wataru Endo is the lone specialist senior defensive midfielder on the Reds’ roster heading into 2024/25. Stefan Bajcetic is not just young but also coming off a lengthy layoff, necessitating the need for him to be gradually incorporated back into the playing XI.
While Endo is a solid player, he is not getting any younger and cannot be expected to play at 100 per cent every game. We saw this last season where his form trailed off toward the business end of the campaign thanks to a cocktail of fatigue and injuries.

Bringing in a dominant number six reminiscent of Fabinho will be key this summer. Gomes certainly ticks that box and also has premier league experience to boot. He is well aware of the demands of thriving in the league and will not need any bedding-in period. At 23, he could provide the Red with a long-term solution for the role.
