Liverpool are ramping up their efforts to sign Turkish star Baris Alper Yilmaz

According to the Turkish outlet Milliyet, Liverpool have kickstarted their efforts to land Galatasaray star Baris Alper Yilmaz soon after Turkey were knocked out of Euro 2024 by the Netherlands.

It would appear that it is Turkey’s exit from the competition that has kicked Liverpool into action. If that is the case, then the Dutch duo of Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo deserve credit for fast-tracking our summer business at least as far as the Galatasaray man is concerned.

Primarily a right winger, Yilmaz can play anywhere along the frontline and is a versatile attacker who could do a job in the Liverpool attack. At 24, he is yet to enter his prime and can be moulded into a player who could eventually take over from Mohamed Salah on the right flank.

Yilmaz was a regular in the Turkish side at Euro 2024, playing every single minute of their five games in the tournament. However, he failed to notch up any goals or assists. While the end product might be lacking, the winger did cause opposition defences concerns and showcased instances of his incredible potential.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the fray for the player and could complicate matters should they also decide to enter into a bidding war. The 24-year-old enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 season with Galatasaray, scoring seven goals and picking up 12 assists across all competitions.

The Turkish giants are in no mood to lose Yilmaz on the cheap and are demanding around €50 million for his services. It would represent a significant investment for a player who is unlikely to walk into the first XI at Anfield.

However, Yilmaz should still cost less than both Anthony Gordon and Nico Williams, both of who are also on Liverpool’s radar. The Reds are in the market for a winger this summer and it can be argued that the latter two are a better fit with higher potential to succeed at the top level.

Yilmaz certainly has potential and is likely to welcome a move to a club such as Liverpool. However, he is not an upgrade on any attacker currently on our roster and the Reds are better off pursuing Gordon or Williams, despite the higher cost.
