Sepp van den Berg is keen to leave Liverpool with PSV Eindhoven interested

Liverpool star Sepp van den Berg is keen to leave Anfield this summer in search of regular playing time. The Dutch centre-back is attracting attention from PSV Eindhoven and has the opportunity to establish himself as a first-team regular in the Eredivisie.

At 22, Sepp still has years to go before reaching his prime. His loan stint in 2023/24 at FSV Mainz elevated his level and he believes it is time for a larger role on a regular basis. Currently back at Kirkby, the centre-back has curried favour with new head coach, Arne Slot who is impressed with Sepp’s performances in training.

In fact, the youngster clocked the best stats, once again showcasing his potential as a future star in the game. The departure of Joel Matip has opened up a spot on the Liverpool centre-back roster, and should Sepp fill that, can save Liverpool millions in the transfer market.

However, according to Voetball International, Sepp is in no mood to compromise and is keen to call it quits on Merseyside this summer. His representatives are now in talks with Liverpool and are keen for the English giants to lower their €20m asking price.

PSV are keen on the player but are unwilling to match the Reds’ asking price. Sepp and his entourage’s actions will make it easier for the Eredivisie giants to make a move, should Liverpool decide to give in. But then, given how the Reds rejected bids from Mainz and Wolfsburg, it appears unlikely they will allow the player to leave on his terms.

With only two years remaining on his contract, the defender believes the time is now rife for him to move away. His entourage believes the Reds are asking for too much money. PSV’s interest has turned his mind, and it remains to be seen how Liverpool play their cards.

Sepp has considerably improved in recent months and established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the air in the Bundesliga. This is exemplified by the fact that he won the most aerial duels (171) out of defenders in Europe’s top five leagues last season. A new sun is dawning at Anfield and the 22-year-old has the opportunity to be a part of the new-look side being built.

We saw how the Reds handled Jarell Quansah last season and with Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, a new centre-back is needed in the current roster. Sepp’s earlier interview combined with his recent actions showcases the mentality of a player who is not keen to fight for a spot and make his point. Elite players thrive in an environment where there is competition. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Harvey Elliott and even Caoimhin Kelleher, all took their opportunities and let their performances on the pitch make their case.

While his potential is clear, the inability or unwillingness to stake his claim rather than demand he be given chances is unbecoming of a Liverpool player. Arne Slot’s recent comments also suggest that he sees a future for Sepp at Anfield. At the end of the day, if it does not work out for him on Merseyside, he will have only himself and his advisors to blame.
