Barcelona are moving fast to land Liverpool a knockout punch in the race for Nico Williams
According to Fabrizio Romano via X, Spanish giants Barcelona are keen to move fast and secure the signature of Liverpool target Nico Williams in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The Catalans appear to have their eye on getting the deal over the line. It would appear they were unwilling to be distracted by Aston Villa’s move for Amadou Onana, instead retaining all attention on landing Williams.
They are currently in talks with the player’s entourage and hope to speed things up next week once the Euro 2024 final is done and dusted. This gives the Reds a small window to act if they are to beat the Blaugrana to the 22-year-old Spanish international.
Williams is a dynamic presence on the left flank and has the world at his feet. He is enjoying a fine Euro 2024 campaign and has the ability to become one of the leading players in world football in the years to come.
The Reds are currently in the market for a winger, as evidenced by their pursuit of Anthony Gordon. Arne Slot already has two sensational left-wingers in his roster, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo. The former, curiously is also linked with a move to Barcelona and it remains to be seen if he will somehow be involved in a domino effect that also impacts Williams.
Diaz, despite his ability has failed to make a consistent difference at Liverpool and the Reds could do with a more decisive player, along the ilk of Sadio Mane. With the likes of Mohamed Salah also not getting any younger, the Reds need a new talisman down the flanks and Williams could be just that. Now the onus is on them to beat Barcelona to the punch.
A generational talent
Williams is an exceptional player who has caught the eye of several of Europe’s top clubs. Potentially a generational winger, the Reds should be doing all they can to secure his services.
English icon Wayne Rooney is also sold on the 22-year-old, even going as far as to compare him to a young Cristiano Ronaldo. While the youngster will have to do much to justify the lofty praise, there is no dearth of potential to prevent it from happening.
“Williams, for me, is exceptional. He reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo when Cristiano was young.”
Liverpool have the opportunity to secure one of world football’s rising stars and the onus is now on them to beat Barcelona to the punch. Whether Richard Hughes and Co. call pull it out of the hat remains to be seen.

Liverpool have in the decades gone by missed out on several top talents, one of them a young Portuguese teen named Cristiano Ronaldo. Then at Sporting CP, he was keen to move to Anfield, only for the then Reds manager Gerard Houllier to to be put off by wage demands. The Reds, eventually signed Harry Kewell, a player who could have been more than a cult[-hero if not for injuries.
The Reds are in a better position today and can even go to toe with Barcelona for a player. With Williams available, we would ensure we do not miss out on another generational talent.
