Caoimhin Kelleher admits that the Arne Slot era at Liverpool is off to an ‘enjoyable’ start
Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher has been linked with an exit from Anfield this summer as he seeks regular playing time. With Alisson Becker the undisputed number one on Merseyside, the Irishman is unlikely to be entrusted with the starting spot anytime soon.
However, Kelleher remains an able deputy who can step in and do a job with minimal fuss. He has twice led the Reds to Carabao Cup glory at Wembley and proved his worth last season when Alisson was out injured. It is fair to say that the 25-year-old would have a claim for a starting berth had the Reds not already had arguably the best goalkeeper in world football in their ranks.
Following Jurgen Klopp’s exit, a new era has dawned at Anfield and Arne Slot appears to have struck the right chord with Kelleher. Speaking to the club’s official website, Kelleher has given a glowering appraisal of pre-season training under Arne Slot and Fabian Otte.
“It’s been really good, really enjoyable.”
The Irishman went on to add that the spine of the Liverpool squad is more or less intact and that a solid base has been created for us to continue what Klopp has started. Slot has inherited an exciting squad brimming with experience and youth and Kelleher could be set to stay on.
“The bones of the squad is still there and we want to push on.”
The 25-year-old’s comments do not explicitly claim he has committed his future to Liverpool but reading between the lines, there is enough reason to give the club and the fans hope. Having a reliable deputy like Kelleher is needed given that we will be expected to compete on multiple fronts. Given that he has time and again proven his worth, there is every reason to believe Slot will continue to give Kelleher opportunities in Cup games.
Kelleher’s words are certainly inspirational as he seeks to further enhance his Anfield legacy. With him keen not to stop going anytime soon, we can rest assured go into 2024/25 with confidence.
“I just want to try to keep going and going on that upward trajectory. It’s been really enjoyable and I’m looking to push on.”
The Irishman’s words are in stark contrast to that of Sepp van den Berg, who is keen to move elsewhere than fight for a spot at Anfield. Liverpool is a club where only the strong survive and fighting mentality is needed for a player to succeed. It is heartening to see that Kelleher appears to have it in abundance.

Kelleher was linked heavily with a move to British giants Celtic, where he would reunite with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. However, the SPL winners have already signed Kasper Schmeichel, more or less securing their starting goalkeeping spot for the next few years. With that door now closed, Kelleher will be well served staying put as we usher in the Arne Slot era.
