End of an era at Anfield? Lunin eyed as Liverpool contemplate Alisson exit
Liverpool are looking at a possible goalkeeping overhaul this summer as the Reds are looking to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the ongoing summer transfer window, per Sport.
The Ukrainian joined Los Blancos in 2018; however, the opportunities coming his way were bleak in the Spanish capital. Hence, he moved around on multiple loan deals to get some game time under his belt, but he suddenly found himself in need of action owing to Thibaut Courtois’ injury absence.
As he played regularly with gloves at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Lunin displayed some promising performances as he helped Madrid win the Spanish championship and made an appearance in the UEFA Champions League finale.
However, with Thibaut Courtois returning from his injury spell, the Belgian keeper was preferred over Lunin in the starting eleven at Wembley Stadium against Borussia Dortmund in the UCL finals.
Slot’s first big call
Now that the 25-year-old is entering the final year of his current contract at Real Madrid, his current employers have offered him new terms, according to reports in the Spanish media. However, Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear to the player that he would not be the first-choice keeper and he would have to settle for a secondary role in case he chooses to pen down a new contract with Los Blancos.
This has forced Lunin’s hands into reconsidering his future at Real Madrid, which opens up possibilities for an exit this summer.
Sport insists that the Reds have already inquired with Real Madrid about the possibility of acquiring Lunin this summer, with the 25-year-old open to joining a ‘Champions League club’ should he be the preferred choice between the sticks.
Liverpool are eyeing Lunin as a possible replacement for Saudi Arabian Pro League-bound Alisson, with the Brazilian linked with a move to the Middle East this summer.
