Trent Alexander-Arnold sends uplifting message to former Liverpool teammate with tarnished Anfield legacy

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold wishes his former teammate Philippe Coutinho well on re-signing for his boyhood club

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has congratulated his former teammate Philippe Coutinho on re-joining his boyhood club Vasco da Gama.

Philippe Coutinho returned to the Premier League after leaving Barcelona in 2018, joining Aston Villa on loan initially under then-manager Steven Gerrard. After thriving on loan, Aston Villa decided to sign him permanently. However, the Brazilian playmaker’s form dipped and he was farmed out on loan to Qatari side Al-Duhail.

The 32-year-old has returned to Vasco da Gama after 14 years, signing on a season-long loan from Aston Villa. Upon signing for his boyhood club, Coutinho took to his official Instagram account to show his gratitude to everyone for their affection, love and good wishes.

Former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho posted on Instagram upon his return to his boyhood club Vasco da Gama.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was quick to send a message on Coutinho’s Instagram post, stating: “Hi Phil, it’s Trent here I just wanted to say all the best and good luck for your new journey and challenge. I know you’ll smash it, all the best my friend.” (h/t Liverpool ECHO)

Alexander-Arnold and Coutinho spent two-and-a-half years at Liverpool before the latter decided to force a move to Barcelona in January 2018. The duo didn’t win anything together as teammates but certainly bonded very well on and off the pitch, as evidenced by the Liverpool vice-captain’s congratulatory message on the Brazilian’s post.

Had Coutinho not forced a move to Barcelona when they came calling back at the start of 2018, he could’ve been a part of the Liverpool juggernaut that won multiple trophies under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and become an icon. The Brazil international was set at Anfield and had become a crucial cog in Klopp’s side, forming a strong connection with the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Nonetheless, it turned out to be the Reds’ best-ever transfer business as they received £142m from Coutinho’s sale to Barcelona, which the club reinvested in the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, and as the cliché goes—the rest is history.

Trent Alexander-Arnold should continue his legacy at Liverpool by signing a new contract.

Unlike Coutinho, Alexander-Arnold cannot let his legacy at Anfield tarnish after coming through the ranks and becoming the club’s vice-captain. He has entered the final 12 months of his contract, and being an ardent supporter of the club and now one of the most experienced members in the dressing room, the England international shouldn’t follow his former teammate’s path and sign a new contract.

The 25-year-old has already achieved so much in his career but he has the chance to become our future skipper and guide the club to rich success under new gaffer Arne Slot. Let’s hope Alexander-Arnold commits his future at his boyhood club by penning a new contract as quickly as possible.
