Michael Owen convinced that Marc Guehi can make a telling difference at Liverpool

Speaking to Prime Casino via The Mirror, following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, former Liverpool star Michael Owen has backed Marc Guehi to have a positive impact at Anfield.

This comes after Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Reds are huge fans of the Crystal Palace star and could start negotiations for his services once Euro 2024 comes to an end. With that cat now out of the bag, attention will shift to whether Richard Hughes and Co can bring in one of the best English centre-backs in the Premier League.

However, a move will not be easy as Palace are seeking around £65 million for the 24-year-old’s services. While the Reds are not averse to paying what it takes to land players they are convinced with, it remains to be seen if Guehi will fall under that banner.

Owen, on the other hand, has no concerns regarding Guehi’s ability to make himself home at Anfield. The former Ballon d’Or winner believes the player’s stock will only have gone up following s strong Euro 2024 campaign with England. More so, he is also a left-sided centre-back, a rare trait in today’s game.

“He’s proven in this tournament that he’s very good. Left-sided centre-halves are like gold dust these days, people want them. He’s proven he can play at a really high level so I’ve no doubt he would be capable of playing for a club like Liverpool or Manchester United.”

Guehi’s acquisition would also position Liverpool well should Van Dijk leave. The skipper’s potential departure would leave a considerable gap in the Reds’ backline, one his successor will have to strive hard to fill. Guehi’s ability to lead the defence and his composed presence on the field would help maintain the high standards set by the current Reds’ skipper.

Owen certainly can pick out a top defender and Guehi fits that bill. At 24, his best years are ahead of him and there is every reason to believe the Englishman can be a rock at the back for the Reds. More so, he has considerable experience playing in England, easing his transition as a potential Anfield regular.
