No progress in Real Madrid’s pursuit of Trent Alexander-Arnold, says Fabrizio Romano
Speaking to CaughtOffside recently, Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Real Madrid’s pursuit of Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.
“There’s no update on Trent Alexander-Arnold at the moment.
“I shared in March that Real Madrid are monitoring the situation and this remains the case, nothing fresh or new so far.
“Real Madrid are just attentive to many situations of good players with short contracts, Alexander-Arnold is one of them.”
Despite playing a key role in his side’s run in the Premier League last season, which almost saw the Reds lift the league trophy a second time in Jürgen Klopp’s last season at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold saw the ghost of his defensive reputation haunt him again this summer at the recently-concluded UEFA Euro 2024.
Having been put in the starting XI by Gareth Southgate as a midfielder, underwhelming performances saw the 25-year-old drop out of the first eleven entirely as the knockouts rolled around.
Alexander-Arnold is valued by Transfermarkt at €70 million. Interestingly, his current £180k-per-week contract at Liverpool, which makes him the third-highest-paid player at the club behind Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk, is set to run out at the end of the 2024/25 season, prompting further speculation about his future.
You just never know
Alexander-Arnold’s shortcomings at the recently concluded Euros can be accredited more to the tactics employed by Southgate. Ideally, one would not want him starting as a midfielder, even if he does tend to go on to occupy positions higher up the pitch in a match, which is something Klopp understood. Even when he asked Alexander-Arnold to move into midfield, he would ask him to do so from a withdrawn defensive position, ensuring his involvement in the first phase of build-up play.
One hopes that the new Liverpool coach Arne Slot has been briefed on Alexander-Arnold’s profile and uses him the right way.
