PSV Eindhoven ready to offer Liverpool €16 million for Sepp van den Berg this summer
Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg enjoyed a productive loan year with Bundesliga outfit Mainz in the 2023/24 season and has impressed so far in pre-season under Arne Slot.
There is already interest in his services with the likes of Brentford, PSV Eindhoven and VfB Stuttgart pondering over his acquisition in this summer’s transfer window.
According to Dutch source Eindhovens Dagblad, Eredivisie side PSV are willing to break its club record to bring in the Dutchman this summer and will be prepared to offer up to €16 million for his purchase.
PSV’s most expensive signing so far came just under a year ago, in September 2023, when they splashed €15 million on Hirving Lozano, who returned to the club after a subpar spell with Napoli.
Arne Slot is understood to be ready to part ways with his compatriot this summer but Liverpool’s asking price is reported to be set at €20 million, slightly over what PSV are willing to pay. If not the Dutch outfit, Brentford will certainly be able to buy van den Berg from the Reds at the said price but it is debatable whether they are in the right to get rid of him.
Virgil van Dijk cast doubts over his future at Liverpool following the Netherlands’ elimination at Euro 2024, whereas Joel Matip departed as a free agent following the end of the 2023/24 season.
Liverpool’s options in the heart of defence are short at the moment and to compound their misery, Manchester United have also snapped up on Leny Yoro’s transfer from under their radar.
Sepp van den Berg is a quality option and has the potential to play regular minutes at the club, and there may not be a better man to trust in his services than his own compatriot, Slot.
