PSV Eindhoven Johan Bakayoko has addressed transfer speculation amid links with Liverpool

Johan Bakayoko has admitted that he would only leave PSV Eindhoven this summer for a ‘top club’ amid interest from Liverpool.

The 21-year-old had a chance to move to the Premier League last summer but snubbed a transfer to Burnley. Having stayed put at PSV Eindhoven, he went on to enjoy a strong season in the Eredivisie. The winger bagged 14 goals and as many assists in 48 appearances across all formats, as PSV romped to an impressive league title triumph.

Johan Bakayoko was a standout performer for PSV and one that could earn him a big move in Europe this time around. Liverpool have been among the host of clubs interested in the young attacker, who represented Belgium at Euro 2024 in Germany. After reporting back to his club for pre-season training earlier this week, Bakayoko has claimed that he will only consider leaving PSV for a club that will offer Champions League football and fight for big trophies.

“If I were to leave Eindhoven, it would only be to a club that plays for the prizes just like PSV,” Bakayoko revealed in an interview with Dutch outlet Eindhovens Dagblad.

“Becoming a champion is what I want. And win the Champions League. I have the qualities for that.

“I’m ready for the top. But PSV is also a top club, especially if many players from last season stay. And it’s nice here.

“Yes, really. Nice. I think I’ve never radiated a moment that I play here reluctantly. The holiday was shortly after the European Championships, but it’s great to get back to PSV. Last season’s vibe is still there.”

Bakayoko’s latest interview should come as a big boost for Liverpool. The Reds are hoping to ramp up their transfer business after a subdued start to the summer window. They have several areas to reinforce, as Arne Slot looks to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

Liverpool make bold decision not to sell superstar with less than 12 months left on current contract
Liverpool must decide on superstar Mohamed Salah with less than 12 months left on his current contract

Following Joel Matip’s release and Virgil van Dijk’s precarious contract situation, the Merseysiders must bring in a top-quality centre-half this summer. In addition, they may also look to freshen up the wide options, with futures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah uncertain. Diaz has been linked with a move away from Anfield whereas Salah’s contract expires next season.

At 32 and his contract winding down, the Reds must come up with a succession plan for Salah. Bakayoko, in that regard, would be a great option as a potential Salah replacement. Primarily a right-sided winger, the Belgian can operate on the opposite flank with minimal fuss and terrify defenders with his burst of acceleration, movement, flair and dribbling skills. He is a highly productive winger who can create and score goals in equal measure—as evidenced by his last season’s contributions for PSV.

Having hinted he is ready for a transfer away from the Dutch champions, Liverpool must be all over Bakayoko’s signature. We can offer him Champions League football and a platform to become a key player in Arne Slot’s revolution. Our club cannot waste further time and must move swiftly to bag his signature.
