Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold has attracted interest from Real Madrid
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has urged the club to quickly tie down vice-captain Trent Alexander Arnold to a new contract amid interest from Real Madrid.
Heading into the 2024/25 season, Liverpool fans have come under the cloud over the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England international’s contract at Anfield expires in less than 11 months and he will be free to speak to foreign clubs in January.
Over the last few weeks, Real Madrid have shown an interest in signing the 25-year-old. They have contacted Alexander-Arnold’s entourage, upping their efforts to lure him away from Anfield on a free transfer next summer. The Liverpool star is believed to be interested in moving to Real Madrid and why wouldn’t he be?
On those lines, Glen Johnson suggested that Alexander-Arnold could struggle to resist the charm of the European champions, imploring Liverpool chiefs to hand him a new contract in order to avoid losing the star right-back on a Bosman transfer in 2025.
“Madrid’s Madrid. Liverpool are going to be going through some uncertain times in the short-term, so if Real Madrid are at the table, it’s difficult for players to not go,” Johnson stated in a conversation with Betfred (h/t Liverpool ECHO).
“If he goes there, he’s likely to win the Champions League again, so I don’t think he could turn that down and Madrid would be crazy to not try and sign him. He could even sign a pre-contract with them from January onwards, but Liverpool can’t lose him for free. He’s way too good for that to happen and it would be ridiculous business for Liverpool to allow him to leave on a free transfer.
“I’m sure Liverpool are trying to keep him, but as the clock’s ticking and if Real Madrid are interested in him, then it’s only going against Liverpool at this moment in time.”
Alexander-Arnold is on holiday after exerting with England at the Euro 2024 in Germany. He was a part of the England squad that reached the Euros final but were unfortunately defeated by Spain 2-1.
The 25-year-old has established himself as arguably the best right-back in the Premier League in recent years. He has charmed the Anfield faithful as well as the pundits alike with his crossing ability, creativity, flair and set-piece prowess. He is a world-class player who has shown his versatility by operating as a quarterback and in central midfield last season.
One of the most experienced members of the dressing right now, the Englishman has to be a serious contender for Liverpool’s future skipper. Given his technical skills, mentality, experience and leadership, coupled with the contract winding down, the ongoing speculation around Alexander-Arnold is inevitable. Every top European club would be desperate to have him in their squad.
