Liverpool have identified Juventus defender Gleison Bremer as an alternative target to Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio
According to a report from CaughtOffside, Liverpool have made an enquiry with Juventus over the possible signing of defender Gleison Bremer.
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the future of skipper Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman is into the final year of his contract—along with stars Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. New gaffer Arne Slot is determined to keep hold of his compatriot and work with him next season, although new contract talks with the Reds’ defensive stalwart are yet to commence.
In recent weeks, Van Dijk has been heavily linked with a switch to Saudi Arabia. He has supposedly given the green light to a Saudi Arabian club to discuss a potential transfer, with Liverpool setting a valuation of around €55 million. This development comes after the 33-year-old served notice of his potential exit from the red half of Merseyside by declaring he is ‘considering his future’ at club and international level after the Netherlands’ Euro 2024 semi-final heartbreak to England.
The aforementioned report claims Liverpool have demanded information on the costs and conditions from Juventus to possibly sign Gleison Bremer, who is understood to be an alternative for the club’s No.1 defensive target of the summer transfer window—Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio.
The Brazilian has firmly established himself as one of the best in the business in Turin, prompting Bianconeri Sergio Brio to crown him the title of ‘best defender in Serie A’. Juventus could let Bremer leave this summer for €70m, as the Reds continue working on plans to replace Van Dijk in their backline. A natural skipper and leader, Van Dijk has been a brilliant servant for the Merseysiders since signing from Southampton in January 2018. He is viewed as one of the most transformative acquisitions made during the Jurgen Klopp era, helping the club win the Champions League and Premier League among several other major honours.
In addition, the Dutchman became the club’s captain last summer and led the team by an example, making 48 appearances across all competitions during the 2023/24 season and winning the Carabao Cup. Thus, filling Van Dijk’s boots will be a herculean task for the Merseyside club.
Given there’s high competition for Inacio, Liverpool have seemingly set their sights on Bremer to potentially replace the Saudi-linked Van Dijk. The Brazil international is rated as one of the best defenders in Serie A, capably leading a Juventus defence that conceded just 31 goals in 38 Serie A games this past season. Composed on the ball, strong in the air and tenacious in the challenge, he will improve the Liverpool squad and give their defence some much-needed robustness that has been lacking in the last couple of years.
