Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid shot-stopper Andriy Lunin
According to a report from Spanish news outlet Marca (h/t SPORT), Real Madrid have slapped a £25 million price tag on goalkeeper Andriy Lunin this summer amid interest from Liverpool.
Andriy Lunin started the 2023/24 campaign as Real Madrid’s third-choice goalkeeper, but injuries to Thibaut Courtois and loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga offered him a window to step in and he duly obliged. The Ukraine international starred in the Champions League-winning campaign, catching the eye, particularly with his performance in between the sticks against Manchester City in the quarter-finals.
However, with Courtois returning from his injury layoff, Carlo Ancelotti drafted the Belgian into Real’s starting XI ahead of Lunin in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at the Wembley Stadium in May. This further demonstrated Lunin’s status at Santiago Bernabeu, justifying his desire to leave the Spanish capital after six years.
Marca claims (h/t SPORT) several Premier League clubs have contacted the 25-year-old’s entourage, including Liverpool, who are planning to revamp the goalkeeper department after Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of last season.
However, for now, no offer has convinced the Real shot-stopper and he is seemingly playing the waiting game. With Lunin having entered the final year of his contract, Real intends to cash him in this transfer window and bring back Kepa on loan from Chelsea as his potential replacement.
Meanwhile, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has two experienced goalkeepers in Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher at his disposal following Adrian’s release in June. Alisson has been among the world’s best goalkeepers for some time now, playing a key role in helping the Reds win all major honours under the tutelage of Klopp. At 31, the Brazilian is still young from a goalkeeper’s perspective and should be hitting his peak soon.
However, Alisson continues to be linked with a move away to the cash-rich Saudi Pro League. One of the best modern-day goalkeepers, Arne Slot obviously would want to start his debut Premier League season with the Brazil international in his first XI. That being said, Liverpool perhaps view Lunin as a potential replacement for Caoimhin Kelleher, who has expressed his desire to become a No.1 after deputising impressively in Alisson’s injury absence this past campaign.

Lunin is an experienced goalkeeper with Champions League-winning pedigree, and Liverpool spending £25 for his services would represent a smart move. That being said, however, it remains to be seen whether the Ukrainian would be willing to accept a back-up role again, this time at Anfield.
