Liverpool FC are the only sustainable football club in the Front Office Sports’ top ten list
As confirmed by the club’s official website, Liverpool FC has achieved the notable distinction of being named one of the top 10 most sustainable sports companies by Front Office Sports. These awards, created in collaboration with the Sports Innovation Lab, celebrate sports organizations that leverage their influence and resources to protect the planet.
The top 10 list honours trailblazers in the industry, recognizing exceptional efforts in carbon and greenhouse gas reduction, nature preservation, water conservation, waste management, impact measurement, and goal-setting. Liverpool FC’s inclusion highlights their innovative and dedicated approach to sustainability.
The Red Way: A Model for Sustainable Practices
Liverpool FC’s sustainability strategy, known as The Red Way, has been integral to their recognition. Launched in January 2021, The Red Way incorporates sustainability into every aspect of the club’s operations, encouraging collaboration among fans, staff, partners, and suppliers. The initiative focuses on three pillars—people, planet, and communities—aiming to achieve 14 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The results have been significant. Compared to the 2021-22 season, Liverpool FC has reduced emissions by 29%, with 94% of their operations now running on clean energy. Additionally, matchday plastic bottle waste recycling has soared from 25% to 90%. This comprehensive approach has set a benchmark in world football.
Rishi Jain, the club’s director of impact, expressed pride in their achievements:
“The Red Way is an incredibly important part of everything we do at LFC. Being recognized globally in the top 10 most sustainable award list is a great achievement that recognizes LFC’s cross-club commitment to sustainability and ensuring a positive change for our people, our planet and our communities.”
The Red Way provides a structured framework for Liverpool FC’s sustainability efforts, with clear objectives and benchmarks for progress. The club’s commitment to continuous improvement is supported by the ISO20121 external verification system, making the Reds the only major European football club to hold this certification.
