Arne Slot speaks out on speculation surrounding Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold
In a recent press conference, new Liverpool head coach Arne Slot refused to be drawn into more discussions about the future of the club’s vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has entered the final year of his Anfield contract, and with no new contract agreed thus far, there has been speculation surrounding his future at the club. However, Liverpool are currently in talks with the England international’s representatives to negotiate a contract extension, to keep him at the club until 2028/2029.
This is a positive bit of news for the Liverpool fans who haven’t had much to cheer about over the summer transfer window following the club’s inability to sign a single player. Real Madrid remain interested in the 25-year-old, although they are yet to make any official approach to Liverpool or table any offer.
Regarding Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation and his future at the club, Arne Slot was quizzed by the media during a press conference ahead of the Reds’ upcoming pre-season tour in the United States.
Slot remained coy on this topic, stating: “My answer will probably be a bit boring, I think it is the same answer you have heard in the last five, six, seven years. That contract situation is not discussed at this place, but just keep trying I would say!”
The Dutch tactician, who has limited experience working outside of the Netherlands, will need to get used to dealing with the English media after landing the job at Liverpool. The highly-rated coach remained relaxed about Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation and immediate future at Anfield, but deep down he will be desperate for the vice-captain’s pledge to the club.
Being a homegrown star and one of the best right-backs in world football in recent years, Liverpool fans will want Alexander-Arnold to quickly sign a new contract and build on his legacy in the red half of Merseyside.
With Virgil van Dijk recently hitting the mid-30s and also in the final year of his contract, Alexander-Arnold is perfectly placed to succeed him soon. The West Derby-born talent has time and again shown his leadership skills on and off the pitch, providing the club with readymade captaincy material once Van Dijk is phased out.
