Donyell Malen seeks PL return with Arsenal and Liverpool keen

Liverpool have to sign a replacement for Mohamed Salah in a year’s time at maximum as he could be on the way to Saudi Arabia once his contract at Anfield expires in June 2025.

Donyell Malen is included in a lengthy list of names linked with a move to Merseyside in recent months with Caught Offside exclusively reporting that he is keen on leaving Borussia Dortmund for a transfer to the Premier League.

Arsenal are also monitoring the right winger and are extremely familiar with his profile as he was a part of their youth setup for two years before departing overseas to join PSV Eindhoven.

Malen joined Dortmund three years ago, where he has enjoyed some of the best years of his career so far and has been tipped to make a move to one of Europe’s bigger sides. His contract at the Signal Iduna Park runs until June 2026 though he has a release clause amounting to only €40 million.

It is still unclear whether any interested party would pay the amount or sit down with the Dortmund delegation to negotiate a lower transfer fee. In either case, Arsenal fancy their chances and believe they can beat Liverpool to his signing.

The Gunners have long been linked with a right winger’s transfer to offer competition to Bukayo Saka. While the Englishman’s position in Mikel Arteta’s plans is indeed safe, his workload management needs to be looked at sooner rather than later.

Arne Slot is yet to make his first significant signing since taking on the Liverpool role from Jurgen Klopp and it would only be fitting if he is able to sign his compatriot ahead of the start of next season.

The Reds are in a strong financial position and therefore, it is not ruled out that they can afford to pay Malen’s release clause.

Anfield would also be a more attractive destination for him as compared to the Emirates Stadium as a starting role following Salah’s departure could beckon, while he will need to compete for a place with Saka in north London.

Without putting too fine a point, Liverpool’s urgency in the transfer market this summer has been lacking but Malen would be a fantastic player to get the ball rolling as far as business is concerned before the start of 2024/25.
